Service Description

This is a six week, one day a week, course designed for the complete novice, new to making your own clothes. This valuable course will show you how to master garment making techniques and also cover basic skills such as how to thread the sewing machine, learning about the various stitches and their uses, general care and maintenance of the machine. You will create a range of stitching samples to help boost your confidence with using a sewing machine, as you progress you will make a selection of samples showing the various garment making techniques, these include collars, waistbands, pockets, zips, sleeves, hems & using different types of fabrics. Week 1 Introduction to the sewing machine, how to thread & use the sewing machine. Seams & Hems You will make a series of samples demonstrating different types of seams such as a basic seam, french seam, felled seams and overlocking seams. You will make up different types of hems and finishing, which included a turned hem, a rolled hem, a traditional skirt hem all using different fabric types. Week 2 Darts, Facings & collars Starting with a bodice sample you will create bust & fitted darts, your samples will include facings, lined bodice & bias binding edging. You will also make a two piece collar for your sample. Week 3 Sleeves & cuffs How to insert the various types of sleeves You will create samples & try out the different methods for set in sleeves, raglan sleeve & a two piece sleeve, to finish off your sleeve you will add a cuff to your sample. Week 4 Pleats, gathers & waistbands You will practice making various pleats including box and knife pleats. Learn how to create gathers & ruffles before moving on to waistbands & creating mini sample skirts . Week 5 Zips and fastenings. You will learn how to insert a basic zip, an invisible zip and a basic fly zip Explore the various buttonholes and their uses, make covered buttons and try out other fastening options. Week 6 Pockets This session is all about pockets!! You will be shown how to construct a basic patch pocket and a patch pocket with a flap. Then we will move on to an In Sea What to bring Notebook A4 folder with dividers and envelopes to keep your work All fabrics, equipment and machinery are provided along with tea, coffee and refreshments. Please note :- All workshops are held on the second floor with access via the stairs Hand sanitiser will be provided throughout
