  • Cambria Costume House

Service Description

In the class you will recreate a needlelace motif from a beautiful embroidered woman’s waistcoat circa 1615, held in the collection at the Fashion Museum in Bath. Using silk gimp threads you will work corded buttonhole and Ceylon needlelace stitches to create your dragonfly as well as Elizabethan plaited braid stitch and Elizabethan spiders webs in gilt smooth passing thread. As the stitches can sometimes be tricky there will be extra materials for you to practise with before using the silk and metal threads. The cost of this workshop is £95 which includes a kit, for you to keep, containing everything you need including a comprehensive instruction booklet. This workshop is run by the amazing Kate Barlow. Kate graduated from the Future Tutors Programme at the RSN with distinction in 2016. During the course she studied many traditional hand embroidery techniques including goldwork, jacobean crewel work, blackwork, stumpwork and silk shading.
